Meet Coach
Curt Burnett
My name is Curt Burnett aka Coach. I am the founder and President of Coach Burnett Sports Academy Inc.
We are a not for profit organization who aims to empower, promote and uplift youth. We use sports, namely basketball as a catalyst to instill transferable life skills that will be needed for future success.
C.B.S.A Inc started when I was a young father who wanted to share my love and appreciation for basketball with my then young son. I hoped to use basketball as a way for us to spend time together and build a stronger bond. I had no idea/intention of establishing an organization that facilitates youth mentoring and development programs.
Through my volunteering at his school to coach his basketball team, I met parents and teachers/administrators whose inquiries and encouragement planted the seed that blossomed into what we are today.
This organization is truly an example of blind fate.
I have been blessed over the years to have great community and individual support.
None of this would have been possible without you all. So from the deepest part of my heart, I want to thank you all for all your support and encouragement. I am looking forward to many more wonderful years of serving our community.
Mentorship Program
As in the old days knowledge and critical information has been passed on verbally and through supervised trials.
This is the same idea behind our mentorship program. Education is very important, but the experience and know how of some who has “been there, done that” is priceless.
So our mentorship program aims to tap into that way of thinking. We pair youth with a mentor in the field of their choosing. Our hope is that their interactions will give them the proper guidance and know how to help them be successful in that field.
We are also looking for professional who will be willing to pass on their knowledge and pour into the future of an up and coming individual in their field. Please contact us if you have any interest in investing in our future.
Basketball Development Program
Our basketball development program is a fun, competitive program in a safe and encouraging environment.
Our goal is not only to develop skills on the court, but also to develop transferable skills which will benefit the participants off the court.
Our drills are unique and unconventional. We not only improve on the players strengths, but also focus on improving their weaknesses.
We work with all skill levels and try our best to give our players the individual attention needed to help them improve their skills and build confidence in themselves.
Please feel free to contact us for more information.
A Leg up Program
Leg Up, according to the Oxford dictionary.
It is a noun, and it is defined as an act of helping someone or something to improve their position.
As defined, it is exactly the goal of our program, helping to improve the positions of our young people by offering assistance towards the acquisition of a higher education.
The purpose of Leg Up is to make available to young people in so-called priority neighbourhoods financial assistance towards achieving a higher education.
One of the biggest obstacles to higher education in so-called priority neighbourhoods, is not lack of intelligence nor of desire. It is the heavy financial burden that comes with attempting to receive a higher level of education.
There are some programs and assistance in place to help, however some such as OSAP, place you even further behind the “8 ball” as you have the pressure and burden of repayment while trying to establish yourself in your career of choice. Some other programs are difficult to obtain information and assistance towards applying, and the amount of competition for such assistance is quite vast. There also seems to be more applications than programs available in some cases.
As with all of our programs, they are developed through conversations and interactions with families within so-called priority neighbourhoods. Education seems to be one way to “even the playing field”. To assist in closing the gap between the haves and have not, a way to offer options and opportunities.
Our goal is to raise $50,000 by September 2027, which is the projected start date for the Leg Up program. We plan to host several events to assist in reaching our goal.
The bursary will range from a minimum of $500 to a maximum of $5000. The bursary will different if you are a first year student or a returning student.
First year applicants:
- Must have a 75% final average
- Must show proof of registration
- Must complete 20 volunteer hours within one of our other programs.
Returning applicants:
- Must have a 2.0 grade point average
- Must have new schedule
- Must complete 20 volunteer hours within one of our other programs.
Finally, you can apply for a bursary every other year if you had received it the previous year.
As always your support is welcomed and needed. Please feel free to contact us with any and all questions or suggestions. Communication is helpful for clarity, development and progress.
Food Card Program
Let’s start off by addressing this term “ food insecurity”. This is what I call a conscience easing term. It’s a term used to mask or gloss over the reality of the situation. The truth is there are many families that are starving, they are having to choose which basic necessity to go without.
To some families Canada is very much a “ third world” country in that their basic needs are difficult to attain and there seems to be very little help from the government.
The food card program aims to help by providing between 2-5 families every month with assistance. We distribute food cards to families to assist with the shortfall they face.
Funds raised from our clothing line directly go to this program, and we have been blessed to have many people participating in some of our fundraising programs. Such as our 50/50 program. Where we ask 50 people to donate $50 to help us maintain our support for these families.
For more information on how you can help or if you need help please contact us.
Merchandise
Our Merchandise is one of our main forms of fundraising. A majority of the proceeds go directly into maintaining and developing new programs.
Each of our logos has a very specific meaning.
BuildOurOwn: It’s not based on race, religion, or gender. We are all in this together. So we are all we got, there is no other planet to move to. So it’s in our best interest that we all build each other up, which in turn makes this a better place for all. So we are Our Own.
So when you purchase an item you know where your money is going and who/what you are supporting.
